Texas doesn’t have a blanket law banning residents from landfilling old electronics the way some states do. What Texas does run is a manufacturer-funded takeback program for computer equipment — the Texas Recycles Computers Program — and a separate manufacturer-funded program for televisions under the state’s TV Recycling Act. The legal obligation there falls on manufacturers, not on a household clearing out a garage. Still, routing an old TV, computer, or monitor to a certified e-waste recycler is the smarter move over putting it in the dumpster, and we’re glad to point you to one. What Never Goes In

Lead-acid batteries and whole unprocessed tires are barred from Texas landfills outright under 30 TAC § 330.15, and knowingly disposing of a battery improperly is a Class A misdemeanor under Texas Water Code § 7.185. Ector County’s own Environmental Enforcement division publishes real penalties for illegal dumping locally — up to two years in state jail and a $10,000 fine for used motor oil, up to a year and $4,000 for a lead-acid battery.
