Neither describes the Permian Basin. This is high-plains, desert wind country, and the risk that actually shapes our spring and early summer is sustained wind, blowing dust, hail, and, less often but very real, tornadoes. On March 18, 2012, a confirmed EF2 tornado tracked through Gardendale, one of the unincorporated Ector County communities we serve, causing roughly $1.0 million in damage and injuring three people. It’s the local reference point longtime residents still bring up when the conversation turns to severe weather — a reminder that a tornado touching down here isn’t hypothetical, even though it’s the exception rather than the rule.
June 12, 2015: A Documented Odessa Hailstorm
Hail is the other event worth planning around, and it doesn’t need a tornado attached to cause real damage. A hailstorm hit Odessa directly on June 12, 2015, the kind of event catalogued by the National Weather Service’s Midland/Odessa office that leaves roofs, siding, and vehicles across a wide swath of the city needing repair all at once. Hail damage tends to generate a very specific kind of debris surge — a lot of roofing work concentrated into a short window — and it’s a big part of why roofing demand spikes right after a storm like this passes through.
Not a One-Off: 39 Tornado Days Since 1950
The 2012 Gardendale tornado is the most memorable single event, but it’s one entry in a longer record. Ector County has logged 39 separate tornado days between 1950 and 2018, with roughly $1.47 million in cumulative damage and 5 injuries across that record. Most of those events were smaller and less newsworthy than the Gardendale EF2, but the pattern is consistent: this is a recurring regional risk tied to the same spring weather systems that bring the area’s wind and dust, not a single bad afternoon that happened to make the news.
Watches vs. Warnings: What Actually Changes Our Plan
Not every forecast mention of severe weather affects a scheduled delivery — a wind advisory or a routine severe thunderstorm watch covering the whole Permian Basin for an afternoon is fairly normal spring weather and rarely changes anything on our end.
